I believe that our work is more than just a job.  It is a path of personal evolution. Each day brings the opportunity to become not just a better leader, but also a better human.

By all accounts,   I have an enviable job.

As one of my mentors says, I get paid to have conversations that matter.

People often ask me how I became an executive coach. My story, probably just like your own, is made up of big fork-in-the road moments, smaller, seemingly insignificant choices and unexpected serendipities. It’s a story best told over a bottle of wine and a leisurely meal, but since that isn’t possible, let me give you the cliff notes.

As the only child in a working-class family, the path into college and beyond was murky, to say the least. In the absence of any real direction, I followed my curiosity – literature, anthropology, religious and social studies. I couldn’t have told you then, but I was on a quest to understand what makes us human. What is universal? What is unique to each one of us? What makes life meaningful?

As college gave way to grad school and a career, I traded my curiosity for practicality. It was a years-long detour into the complexities of working inside large institutions. Like any career, there were high’s and there were low’s. But what defines those years was an insistent knowing that I was in the wrong place, doing the wrong things and wasting whatever natural talents I had.

For a long time, I believed I sold out.

I no longer believe that. In fact, given the choice, I would make the same choices all over again. I believe that no experience is wasted if we put it to good use.

As I’ve circled back to my fascination with what it means to be human, I now bring a more grounded, practical and actionable approach. My conversations with clients weave seemingly disparate worlds together – we might focus on business strategy, organizational dynamics or, just as easily, swerve into behavioral science or wisdom traditions.

And as for where I’ve chosen to be an executive coach, where else in the world would I be? Is there another city in the world that celebrates reinvention more than NYC?
